When you’re running a business your to-do list can feel like it’s never-ending. Between operations, leading your team, maintaining client relationships, driving sales, and planning strategically for the future, marketing often slips to the bottom of the priority list.
And it’s no wonder… being pulled in a dozen different directions doesn’t leave much room for crafting the perfect marketing plan. But here’s the good news. You don’t have to do ALL the marketing things. You just need to focus on doing the RIGHT things. Consistently.
Step One: Create Your Priority Framework
Random marketing activities scattered across channels rarely deliver meaningful results. For example, posting sporadically on every social media platform without a clear strategy often leads to wasted effort. By contrast, a well planned email campaign targeting high-value clients can drive tangible outcomes.
Start by creating a clear framework for your marketing priorities. List every marketing activity you’re currently doing. No, evaluate each one through these three lenses:
- Revenue Impact (1 = low, 5 = high): Does this activity lead to direct sales?
- Time Investment (1 = high effort, 5 = minimal effort): How efficiently can you execute this?
- Measurability (1 = vague, 5 = trackable): Can you measure its results?
Add the scores together. Activities scoring 10 or higher should be your focus. They’re impactful, efficient, and measurable. This framework will help you make objective decisions about where to focus your limited time and resources. Activities that don’t make the cut should be either eliminated or put on hold until you have additional resources to support them.
Step Two: Focus on Your Priority Channels
Once you’ve scored your activities, it’s time to focus on your highest-scoring channels. Tackling too many channels dilutes your messaging, wastes resources, and leads to burnout. Instead, focus on 2-3 channels where your audience is most active. For example:
- B2B companies might prioritize LinkedIn and email
- DTC brands often thrive on Instagram and TikTok
- Tech startups might concentrate on Twitter and LinkedIn
By narrowing your focus, you’ll see stringer results without overextending yourself and your team.
Step Three: Build Sustainable Systems
Consistency, not perfection, is the key to success. Reliable, value-driven marketing builds trust and fosters long-term engagement. To ensure sustainability:
- Dedicate resources to high-impact activities
- Use SOPs, templates, and automations to save time
- Avoid time-consuming projects (like podcasts) until you can maintain consistency.
Step Four: Schedule Non-Negotiable Marketing Time
Marketing is a critical function of your business, and it deserves dedicated time on your calendar. Set aside time, daily or weekly, to focus solely on marketing. Morning blocks often work best, as you’re less likely to be pulled into other priorities. This is your time to work on your business rather than in your business. By scheduling consistent marketing time, it will become a priority, rather than an afterthought.
Step Five: Focus on Revenue-Driving Metrics
Data is a powerful tool. But too much data can overwhelm and distract, causing paralysis by analysis. Choose 3-4 metrics that align with your business goals and track those consistently.
Track these metrics for your priority activities:
- Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
- Lifetime Value (LTV)
- Lead-to-Customer Conversion Rate
- Revenue by Marketing Channel
Review these monthly and adjust your strategy based on what’s working.
Moving Forward
I can’t stress this enough. Successful marketing isn’t about being everywhere. Consistent, focused efforts on key channels yields better results than trying to maintain a presence everywhere.
Before jumping on the next shiny marketing trend or joining the newest social platform (doe we really need a Red Note account?), take a step back and evaluate.
- Is it aligned with our business goals?
- Will it deliver measurable results?
- Is it a sustainable strategy?
If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” as yourself why you’re considering it. Remember, strategic prioritization and consistent execution will always drive better outcomes than trying to do everything all at once.
