How an Environmental Stewardship Renewed Their Community Engagement Through a Digital Transformation

Ridge Meadows Recycling Society

The Company

Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS) is a community-focused champion for environmental stewardship. Established in 1972 by volunteers, the organization has since forged vital partnerships with local and regional bodies, including the City of Maple Ridge, Metro Vancouver, and Recycle BC. While RMRS remained deeply committed to its grassroots mission of waste reduction, the rapid pace of digital evolution had left its online presence lagging behind its real-world impact.

The Challenge

Despite enjoying steady online traffic, the legacy RMRS website had outgrown its structural capacity. A lack of clear content hierarchy resulted in a chaotic user experience that diluted the organization’s core messaging. To re-instill trust in the RMRS brand, the platform required a complete UX/UI transformation, one that visually differentiated everyday community services from specialized recycling logistics.

The Strategy & Goals

Our objective was to streamline the user journey while giving the historic brand a modern digital voice. We established five core pillars for the project:

  • Intuitive Navigation: Structure the sitemap so residents can find critical information within seconds.
  • Content Modernization: Lean out legacy copy and establish a clear, authoritative tone that aligns with a refreshed logo and brand identity.
  • Dynamic Functionality: Deploy a user-friendly database for accepted recyclable materials to reduce sorting confusion.
  • Community-First Engagement: Build dedicated, easily updatable hubs for local events and educational programs.
  • Universal Accessibility: Resolve technical debt to ensure a seamless, fully responsive experience across mobile and desktop devices.

The Thought Process: Reduce, Reuse, Redo

Embracing the RMRS motto, Able & Howe applied an environmental philosophy (Reduce, Reuse, Redo) to their digital architecture. We audited the site, stripped redundant content, and transformed an overwhelming wall of text into a vibrant, scalable educational hub. Today, the modern platform serves nearly 3,000 visitors per month, setting a new benchmark for civic modernization and public communication.
